Tyler Sleeper joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Centerin June 2014. He is currently the head athletic trainer at Blue Valley West High School.

“We are the first line of defense for the student athletes,” said Sleeper. “We usually see the injury occur and can treat those injuries accordingly. We also give parents sound advice on what the next course of action should be.”

Sleeper provides assistance for injuries and also focuses on education. He believes the more prepared athletes, coaches and staff are about injuries, emergency situations and care of athletes, the safer their athletic environment.

“The relationships and interactions I have with my coaches, faculty and students is the best part of my job,” said Sleeper. “Our open communication helps everyone stay on the same page and ensures we have a consistent plan of action if and when injuries occur.”

Sleeper was a competitive hockey player for more than 10 years. He was first introduced to athletic training his senior year of high school when he tore his ACL during a hockey tournament. He knew he wasn’t going to continue playing hockey in college after his injury, but wanted to stay involved in sports. He decided to pursue athletic training for his career.

Sleeper received his undergraduate degree in athletic training from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and his master’s degree in sports management from Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. Prior to joining The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center, he worked as an athletic trainer with the Dubuque Fighting Saints hockey club and then the Wichita Falls Wildcats hockey club.

Sleeper is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, fishing and generally being outdoors.
